How to get FusionIO card to be recognized by VMware ESXi? Ask Question 3. I am working on a new IBM Bladecenter setup with a few blades that have the 320GB FusionIO cards. Without the ESX drivers, they won't be visible as storage devices in vSphere manager, only as pass-thru devices. Share| improve this answer. Answered Apr 26 '11 at 22:34.
This blog post will describe how to install the driver on VMware ESXi 5 using the vSphere Update Manager. First things first, grab the latest driver from the VMware website, at the time of writing the driver is available. Next we need to import the patch file into the vSphere Update Manager, the patch file is included into the downloaded zip file. It should be named: iomemory-vsl-2.3.9.54-offlinebundle-632012.zip. From the vSphere Update Manager click the “Import Patches” link: Follow the steps in the wizard, after that the patch should be visible in the repository: The next step is to create a baseline and assign the update to the baseline.
From the baseline and groups tab, select “new baseline”: Next, select “Host extension” as baseline type, this important because otherwise the update will never be applicable to any of your hosts. In the next wizard step, include the Fusion IO driver: Finish the wizard.
Last but not least, we need to assign the baseline to the appropriate server, or cluster. Then scan the specific host or cluster and remediate the entry or entries. I have not included any screenshots of these steps because this is specific for your environment.
Last week I did a VMware vSphere and VMware View 4 to 5 upgrade. The ESXi servers for the VMware View environment uses Fusion-IO (HP IO Accelerators) PCI flash cards for there non-persistent VDI pools. After the upgrade to vSphere 5.1 I imported the latest Fusion-IO drivers and created a baseline in vSphere Update Manager (VUM) and deployed the new drivers to the cluster. After the installation of the Fusion-IO drivers on the ESXi hosts, the Fusion-IO card was not listed in the vSphere (Web) client. Via SSH I make a connection the the ESXi servers.

When i run the fio-status command the following warning appeared: Driver is in Minimal mode: The firmware on this device is not compatible with the currently installed version of the driver. ACTIVE WARNINGS: The ioMemory is currently running in a minimal state. The warning means that the firmware needs to be upgraded. I uploaded the firmware to a central datastore and run the following command: fio-update-iodrive firmwarefilename.fff When the firmware upgrade completed, the ESXi servers needed to restart. After the rebootI checked the status with the fio-status command again.
The Fusion-IO card is out of minimal mode. After the firmware upgrade the Fusion-IO card is listed again.
